Verb Phrase Internal Subject Hypothesis in Language and Music

Verb Phrase (VP) Internal Subject Hypothesis as an important concept in Generative Linguistics claims that subjects are generated in Verb Phrases and then move to its special place in syntactical structure. This phenomena may be a cross-domain aspect between language and music. In order to demonstrate this proposal, present project analyzes three different compositions which are different in time, region and culture: Medieval Music, Western Classical Music and Turkish Art Music. This work shows that how structural aspect of the hypothesis are applicable to cross-cultural music analysis.
